Ella 100 at Hideaway Streatham
25th April 2017 would have been the 100th birthday of a musical legend, Ella Fitzgerald. We're going to be celebrating the life of one of our favourite artists with a special live concert at Hideaway Streatham on Sunday 4th June.
It's a relaxed Sunday lunchtime concert, and Hideaway Streatham is the perfect venue to enjoy live music. Food and drink is available all afternoon to enjoy whilst watching the show - and there will also be a dancefloor to help burn off the calories from the delicious Sunday lunch!
Tickets are £10 in advance, and Under 16s go free. We often sell out our shows at Hideaway Streatham, so advanced booking is highly recommended.
Hideaway is located two minutes from Streatham British Rail station, with direct trains to St. Pancras International, St. Albans and Watford.
We'll be performing some of our favourite Ella Fitzgerald repertoire, including some new songs. Here are some of the tunes you can expect to hear on the day.
Blue Skies
Ella Fitzgerald was famous for her improvised scat singing, and on the album Ella Sings the Irving Berlin Songbook she treated us to one of her best studio performances on the hit tune Blue Skies, arranged and conducted by Paul Weston.
At Hideaway Streatham our fabulous vocalist Katie Birtill will be re-creating this scat solo note-for-note!
Shiny Stockings
Shiny Stockings is a jazz standard written by Frank Foster, tenor saxophonist in the Count Basie band. It's a hit with swing dancers, and was listed by the legendary Lindy hopper Frankie Manning as one of his favourite songs to dance to.
When Ella and Basie collaborated on the Ella and Basie album, Ella added words to Frank Foster's tune resulting in this great recording, which we will also be re-creating on Sunday 4th June.
Take the 'A' Train
Some of our favourite Ella Fitzgerald albums are her live recordings, and they don't get much better than the Live at Hollywood shows. One of the best tracks on the album is a 9-minute improvisation on Duke Ellington's Take the 'A' Train.
Our version of the song features a Ella-style scat solo, followed by a rousing rendition of the song Duke Ellington style from the instrumentalists in the band. Here's a small taste of what to expect!
